Hi,
we use Power BI a lot internally and about 6 months ago we invested in a premium Embedd workspace to also embedd Power BI reports directly in our customer web portal.
To keep things organized we set up a separate workspace ("... Embedd Reports") where we would keep all PROD versions and publish from. The first report ("Report A") we launched had its own semantic model (Import) and both the semantic model and the report were kept in the "... Embedd Reports" workspace.
But I also have a large semantic model (kept in "... datasets" workspace) from which I spin off separate smaller reports that are connected to the dataset by live connection. One of those smaller reports ("Report B") I wanted to embedd in our customer web portal now. So I published Report B to the "... Embedd Reports" workspace, while its semantic model resides in the "... datasets" workspace. This however didn't work as I'm not able to embedd the report in the same way as I could Report A.
Also, I've already tested with a duplicate of my large semantic model saved in the "... Embedd Reports" workspace and the live connection of Report B switched to that one. In this case, everything works again.
My question, can I have embedded reports connected to semantic models that reside in a different workspace?
Because I don't want to maintain duplicates of my large semantic model in multiple workspaces.
Thanks for your help!

I figured it out. The client that loads the reports into our control panel needed Admin access to both workspaces. I had set them up with "Contributor" access in my "... datasets" workspace.
Hi @Mr_Glister
You connected a semantic model using live connection model then created a report based on it, made save a copy of this report to another workspace and could not embed to website. If I understand correctly, after my testing, I did not encounter the same problem as you.
"This however didn't work as I'm not able to embedd the report in the same way as I could Report A."
Could you please describe in detail what situation it is? Is there no Website or portal option or is there an error message or something else?
Best Regards,
Yulia Xu
I'm trying to describe my situation in detail.
You connected a semantic model using live connection model then created a report based on it, made save a copy of this report to another workspace - This part is exactly correct. Then there is one more step. A previous IT consultant built an internal control portal in between the Power BI service and our customer web portal, through which I can control and publish Power BI reports to our web portal. But I know nothing about how this works on the backend. My error occurs when trying to load a report with semantic model and report in different into the control panel.
But since I do not have any problems as long as the semantic model and the report are saved in the same Power Bi workspace, I expect that the problem is related to PowerBI somehow.
If you say there is no intrinsic problem with embedding reports with live connection to a different workspace, is there something I need to be particularly aware of when giving access rights to the different workspaces?
I figured it out. The client that loads the reports into our control panel needed Admin access to both workspaces. I had set them up with "Contributor" access in my "... datasets" workspace.
