Editing powerBi report that has been published

Hello,

I am facing the challenge of making changes (powerQuery, measures) to the report, when report has been already published.

Normally what I have been doing --> is to download the Pbix file --> make changes --> publish it again- but it is not very efficent and time consuming.

Also worried about links of this report I sent to people, that they will be not active anymore.

In excel online, there is a feature "Open in desktop app"- is there is something similar in powerBi?

I watched videos of people who are live connected to a specific data model&report- can u give me a hint or a tutorial on how to do it?

Best regards,

Tomasz

no as i said, this isnt a tool like excel or word, its not a typical office application.  For development you need to use power bi desktop.    You either change it in the service as you have been or you do dev in the development tool which is what is recommended.

There are better ways to manage your situation though, if you are in a development stage of your dashboard, when you demo just use the desktop tool to demo.  Keep a copy of power bi in a place where you can keep the latest version (and store previous versions if you want) as well as giving access to your manager to make changes.

For example can also store a copy of the pbix or a pbit (template) in onedrive which will have version control.

here is a an article you can read on the topic

I am not sure why you arent just keeping a development copy that you use to update that and then publish changes via the desktop rather than downloading and updating?   The service isn't meant to do much development or in a browser, that is what the desktop tool is purposed for.

@vanessafvg thanks for you reply!

I wanna do it because:
Sometimes before presenting a report I want to make some quick changes (e.g. colors, positions, names) and view the report in the report view- powerBi service enables me to do it quickly.

Also sometimes my supervisor wants to have access to change some things- so she can change colors, names etc.

Then when done I have to download this report and make changes in DAX, pquery etc.

Is it possible to do something with it?
