    thanks Stefano, it appeared to be an issue with the excel file being local and the power BI datasets being in the cloud. Once i moved the excel file to sharepoint and created a web connection so everything was cloud based it worked fine

    Your post was helpful Anonymous ! I had the same error, except that my local source was a SQL Server from which I imported a table. I had to first configure my Power BI gateway for the import source (1), and only then was I able to provide web credentials for the Power BI Datasets (2).
