Different data between Online and Desktop

We have a report that shows different data when viewed Online vs local Desktop. The Desktop version is the superset of data, matching the data source, while the Online version is missing records. I've downloaded the online PBIX file from online and ran it locally, no changes made, and the data/visuals are different than online. I've then removed the online reports and datasets, uploaded the PBIX, and the results are the same as the original online version, i.e.: it is missing records compared to local.

I've used the Analyse in Excel functionality in the online version to search through the raw data, and the records are missing, so I don't believe it's a configuration in the visuals.

Are there logs or something simlar to the query editor online so that I can understand whats happening to my data?

Any suggestions on how to diagnose would be greatly appreciated.

Hi @ColinGeddes,

Normally, the report and dataset are same in Power BI desktop and service. It's weird to miss some records. " I've downloaded the online PBIX file from online and ran it locally, no changes made, and the data/visuals are different than online."  mean you publish all reports and dataset successfully. If you set any Row-level security in your report? Or your admin set any access permisson in service? Could you please share the .pbix file for further analysis?

Best Regards,
Angelia

Hi Angelia,

Yes, the same pbix file is uploaded on the web service that is opened in the desktop version and the results are different. No row level security, no access permissions (I'm the admin), no other config or changes (beyond setting the API / Sharepoint login details required when moving pbix files).

I'm just not sure where else to look! It appears as there is a difference with the web API json processing between the service and desktop versions, with the service version is loosing some records as it processes. I've tried to find something obvious in the raw data (special characters, null values, etc), but nothing stands out. It's a really unlikely possibility, but that's where things are pointing.

The pbix has some semi-sensitive information that I'd rather not publish here, happy to share via a remote session or through other means.

Hi @ColinGeddes,

I guess the missing records are caused by the web API json processing, but I am not specific about API. So I can't give the detailed reason, I personally suggest you post your case to the Power BI developer community, where you will get delicated support. Thanks for understanding.

Best Regards,
Angelia
