Date Parameters - PowerBI Service

I haven't found a clear answer on this topic - I am using DirectQuery to pass a StartDate parameter back to the SQL statement.  The intention is to allow my user to select the date range for the report and return only that data, as the entire dataset is large.  I have the StartDate parameter set up as a slicer on my report and it is functional on PowerBI Desktop.  When I publish to PowerBI Service, I get this error on my visual.  Is this functionality just not compatible with PowerBI Service or am I missing something here?
