Dataset refresh takes too long
Auto refreshing is something you usually do with Streaming or Push Datasets, or with Dashboards. Have you considered pushing the JSON into a Hybrid Streaming Dataset?
I can't find much information about Hybrid Streaming Datasets. Do you have any documentation or resources which could help? It this related to "Real-time streaming" which is being retired next week?

That's a (rather unwelcome) surprise, especially with the level of immaturity around the Kusto based solutions. I would recommend you quickly create a couple of streaming datasets so you can use them for the next three years, with the hope that by then Kusto is a viable alternative.
