Dataset permissions for entire organization

Hello everyone,

a few weeks ago we encountered an unexpected behaviour in Power BI Service, which we can't resolve.

We use an app to publish reports & datasets to our whole organization and had never issues regarding permissons, as long as the users had licences and were properly added in our AD structure.

The new behaviour:

Updating or publishing a new report to the whole organization will not grant everyone permissions to the underlying datasets.

From what i can tell, only the people who are part of the workspace do have permissions to the dataset.

I can resolve this by adding every user manually via the permissions tab of the dataset, but since we got many datasets across many apps this isn't a suitable way.

This results in the error:  Permission Required - You cannot see the content of this report because you do not have permissions to the underlying dataset. Please contact report owner for details.

What we tried already:

- Removing said reports from the App completly & re-publish them

- Changing the datasource settings inside the reports

- Creating new audiences

Did anyone encounter something similar or got any ideas of how to fix this?

Kind regards

Chris

  • Hi! crisc

This sounds weird, I would advise you to raise a ticket to MS. Also, in case you go on to give perm on all the Apps. I would suggest having an AD group for your whole organization and then you can use that AD group to give perms on the datasets. First I would say raise a ticket with MS and let the expert check it.

Pls, update the post once you resolve this.

  • Good morning everyone,

it seems like there are some problems regarding the settings of our E5 licences.

The problem itself is not fixed as far as i can tell, but since i found a work around (excel list with all E5 users + copy paste them to the datasets) and i don't administer the licenses, there is not much more i can do at this point.

    Kind regards

    Chris

My organization has been experiencing an identical issue. If I understand correctly, the issue can be corrected internally though the organization (admins)? Or is there something I can be doing as a licence holder?
