Hi,
I've created a new report based on a Power BI dataset and a Dataflow. It works fine running in the Power BI Desktop on my machine. But in the Power BI service I get the error "The data source Extension is missing credentials and cannot be accessed".
According to other posts the error occurs because:
The error typically happens when the credentials of the dataset been changed. Go to dataset setting in the credential section re-enter the credentials.
Because I've created a report using the composite model feature (shared dataset + dataflow) the report itself has its own dataset referring to the other sources. The "Data source credentials" setting of this dataset show the following error:
"The credentials for the data source type powerbi:// and asazure:// have already been set, but you can edit them if needed."
Failed to test the connection to your data source. Please retry your credentials."
The error refers to the dataset I'm connected with using Direct Query.
If I click on "Edit credentials" the following window opens.
If I click on sign in I receive a message that the data source has been updated. But nothing happens. The error still persists.
Can you tell me what to do in this case? Thanks a lot in advance.

I love when while looking for an answer I find the solution myself. 😂
The thing I missed was that I needed to insert my credentials for the shared datset AND the dataflow separately.
I totally missed that "Edit credentials" is shown two-times.
Thus, the mytsery is solved.
Cheers
I've created a report based on a Power BI dataset in Direct Query Mode from Dremio Software .
It works fine running in the Power BI Desktop . But in the Power BI service , report server ; I get the error "The data source Extension is missing credentials and cannot be accessed". i tried to verify the credentials which is the same on pozer bi desktop but it"s refused on Power Bi service
Did you find a solution to this
I was given to this read by a Microsoft SE to explain why there is an extra authentication step:
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/enterprise/service-admin-power-bi-security
and this short explanation as well:
• The Back-End cluster determines how authenticated clients interact with the Power BI service. The Back-End cluster manages visualizations, user dashboards, semantic models, reports, data storage, data connections, data refresh, and other aspects of interacting with the Power BI service. The Gateway Role acts as a gateway between user requests and the Power BI service. Users don't interact directly with any roles other than the Gateway Role. Azure API Management eventually handles the Gateway Role.

I did not find the dataset or edit credentials on my PowerBI server.
Here is the solution:
