To work with PDF files you will have to use a gateway, it won't be psosible without it.

To install PowerBI gateway you can have a look at below link:

This link has been shared with me before, but it is talking about on-premises data gateway. Can you more clearly explain the process as to how I would create a gateway to a SharePoint folder URL?

Screen shots of the process would be greatly appreciated.

  You will have to first install the on-prem gateway and only then you can proceed forward by configuring sharepoint connection there.

    This doesn't help. It is talking about on prem and document libraries. I am not sure how any of this relates to using SharePoint Folder as a data source.
    
    If you could please provide screen shots and detailed explanation instead of sharing links that reference on prem solutions it would be appreciated.
