Greetings. I have a Power BI dataset for which I cannot set the data source credentials. I compared the gateway connection portion to another tenant and the option for using Personal Cloud Connect is set on both tenants for the same data.
The data sources are Business Central and Solver, which is a reporting and planning system. Both are cloud-based solutions.
The odd thing is, at one point, I had this working when I only had Business Central. Then I added an Excel file and that's when things went sour. I replaced the Excel file with the Solver connector, but I still can't seem to get the data source credential option to appear. I created new connections and set the credentials for them, but they don't stay selected and the personal cloud connection option is selected.
Solved! Go to Solution.
Thank you for the advice. It turns out I still did have a table from Excel in the file. It did not even register to me that the prescense of the data source indicated the file was still being used. It wasn't until I tried to delete a query I knew was based on the file, which was open, that I found the file was still being used. A big "a ha" moment.
Once I realized the file was in use, I replaced it with data from a different data source and then found the data source window in PBI was missing the record for the file. I published the report and, Voila!, the refresh functionality worked.
Whew!
Thank you again.

1. Remove legacy Excel traces
Open your .pbix file in Power BI Desktop
Go to Transform Data → Data source settings
Look for any old Excel or local file path sources
Clear permissions and delete them if found
2. Rebuild or Validate Cloud Connections
In Power BI Service, go to Manage Connections and Gateways
Confirm both Business Central and Solver connections exist and use OAuth2
Ensure they match exactly with the data source definitions in your .pbix
3. Re-publish with clean metadata
After cleaning up Excel traces and validating connections, save the .pbix
Re-publish it to Power BI Service
Open the dataset settings and check if:
The Data Source Credentials section appears
You can switch from "Personal Cloud Connect" to a valid cloud connection
4. Use Organizational-level Connections (if available)
If permitted, avoid Personal Cloud Connect and use certified or organizational-level connections for better stability
The top item, LTA dashboard, is not used by this dataset.
