Data Source Access Error for Some Users in Power BI with AtScale (Live Mode) and Snowflake
Hi Everyone,
I am facing a data source access issue in some of my Power BI reports while using AtScale as a semantic layer on top of Snowflake, with a live connection to Power BI.
Scenario:
- The report is connected to Snowflake via AtScale in live mode.
- The report is published in Power BI Service and shared with multiple users.
- All necessary gateways are enabled and working.
- No permission restrictions exist in AtScale as of now, and users have Power BI Service access.
- The visuals used for all reports are table or matrix visuals.
Issue:
- Some users are unable to access the report and receive a data source access error, while others can view it without issues.
- The issue is inconsistent—some users with identical roles and access can see the report work fine, while others do not.
Troubleshooting steps tried:
- Deleting and republishing the report worked randomly for one user, but not others.
- Upgraded to F64 capacity and enabled large semantic model options, but the issue persists.
- Checked Gateway logs & connection settings – No issues found.
- Checked if affected users belong to a different Power BI workspace, security group, or role assignment – No differences found.
Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas on how to fix this issue? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Hi ,
This issue has been resolved after we upgraded Atscale into a higher version. Thanks for the support everyone!

Immediate thought is do all users have the needed licenses? Are you on an E5/A5 tenant, PPU or individual Pro licenses?
Are you sharing this as a report or through a Power BI app. If you are doing it as a report, I would try publishing it as an app and using an entra security group to handle the security.

Are you passing through user credentials to snowflake/atScale. When you save live do you mean direct query? What is the error message?

Hi, We are using a live connection (Not direct query) from Atscale model to PowerBI. So report picks data from Atscale semantic layer. We connect Atscale to the reporting layer using an Atscale token.
The error message on top of report page mentions that the report could not access data source. The report shows the error "An exception occured due to an on premise service issue".

Hi, Thanks for the suggestion.
Some users facing this issue ,are currently trying to access the report via Pro and free trial versions since we are in the testing phase. Also, we have a majority of other users who are able to access the report just fine.
Our organisation has a F64 or P1 capacity.
And, the reports are shared using a workspace directly as per requirement and not via an app.

Hi Uthara_Prakash , Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Community Forum.
If some users can access the report while others cannot even though they have identical roles and access, please try below troubleshooting steps:
- Check that affected users have valid AtScale tokens and correct user mappings. Ask them to clear cache or try Power BI in incognito mode. Ensure no firewall, VPN, or network policy is blocking access. Have users try a different network.
- Use Snowflake Query History to see if queries are triggered when accessing the report. If missing, it may be an authentication issue. Review Power BI Audit Logs and AtScale logs for errors.
- If the above doesn’t help solve the issue, then please consider reaching AtScale Support and Microsoft Power BI Support, as they may have insights specific to this integration.

Thanks for the suggestions!
- All users are accessing the reports using the same permissions and tokens. We also tried accessing reports with good newtwork after clearing cache and from incognito mode.
- We have reviewed the Power BI Audit Logs and AtScale logs for errors and are currently working with support teams from both Atscale and PowerBI.
