I've been experiencing an intermittent data refresh issue with the Power Bi Service semantic data model with the following error code: "DM_GWPipeline_Gateway_CanceledError".
No change has occurred to the data model or underlying Azure Sql database prior to this issue starting to appear intermittently.
Things I've tried:
- checking that the data connector is set to "Organizational" level of access
- updating the data connector to see if that reset things
- updating the processing power of the back-end Azure SQL database
Any help is appreciated. It's only been happening recently but has been ticking along happily for over 6 months prior to this.
Thanks in advance.

Just a note: I've had 2 new errors of this type happen in the last few days...... when I thought it had been resolved for my case.
I can't re-install the previous version of the pipeline because I'm not actually using it within my configuration. I have migrated to Azure SQL ages ago - way before the errors started occurring.
I therefore think, in my case, it's something the Azure or Power BI team need to do on the cloud servers.
October? The issue for us didn't start until January. Which version # are they saying to roll back to?
I'm sorry I don't have more detail, the IT department is testing the fix on our test environment.
No worries. Keep us posted if it works!
It would be really good to get a Microsoft person to let us know why this is happening - the reason why it started in the first place. This might help explain why it's all fixed for me but still happening for others.
My current guess is that it's related to the gateway version installed on the cloud servers for Azure SQL.... but this is a total guess with the error message given and the lack of any official information on why the issue occurred.
There is a Microsoft ticket submitted that has been escalated. They acknowledged several companies are having the same issue. Once there is any update from them, I'll post here and on my post as well with any details.
We updated the gateway to the latest version and are still having the issue.

I get this regularly. "DM_GWPipeline_Gateway_CanceledError". It doesn’t seem to tie to any specific report. Just random failures. Usually in the morning but not always. Just re-running the report refresh always succeeds. I can never replicate the issue and it happens on reports that take 5 – 10 minutes to run. That run time is mostly on the Microsoft side, I’m assuming they are waiting in a queue. They don’t take that long to refresh manually from desktop client. I am up to date on the updates. I upgraded it last Friday 5-1-25.
We've been having this issue since a couple of days.
The error message is as follow:
{"error":{"code":"DM_GWPipeline_Gateway_CanceledError","pbi.error":{"code":"DM_GWPipeline_Gateway_CanceledError","parameters":{},"details":[],"exceptionCulprit":1}}} Table:
We plan to upgrade the on premise data gateway to the lastest version tomorrow. Hope it fixes the problem, in the mean time we can't refresh a lot of our reports. 😕
We updated the gateway and we still have this error^.
We have a ticket with Microsoft support too.
Any update from microsoft on this issue?
Our issue magically resolved itself after exactly 7 days since it first started. Everything we tried with microsoft support did not work (network/firewall/upgrading and downgrading gateway version/gateway configuration/increasing c drive/etc...). It just went away one morning and hasn't been a problem for over a week now.
Microsoft is still investigating. We're still experiencing the issue, not daily, but every other-ish.
@v-menakakota Can you provide some details or documentation on the "known issue" that was resolved?
It would be helpful to know things like:
-- Nature of the issue
-- Versions affected
-- Date issue started
-- Date issue resolved
We've been seeing similar sporadic failures with random datasets , but the exact error message was slightly different. I'd like to see if the timing lines up.
The data refreshes error appears to have been resolved now for some days so I'm guessing it was related to the known resolved issue that you refer to in your post.
Thanks
Sandy
I've been dealing with this as well. We didn't have issues for a couple days, but they came back last night.
We are also experiencing the same failed refresh error DM-GWPipeline-Gateway-CanceledError and there is another thread on the same topic: https://community.fabric.microsoft.com/t5/Service/Intermittent-DM-GWPipeline-Gateway-CanceledError/m.... We have not changed anything except upgrade our gateway version to 3000.254.3. It is affecting different data sources, all are small in size, not close to our capacity, only a few reports refreshing at the same time.
Hi @sandy_ew
Could you please double check to make sure that there are no changes that have been made on the gateway server or hardware configuration also? Could it be possible to make sure you have got the latest version of the standard gateway installed?
Hi GilbertQ,
I will ask for this to be checked as I don't manage this part.
A while ago I updated the database from an on-premise SQL Server to an Azure SQL database. I was under the impression that gateways were not used for Azure SQL connections..... is this incorrect?
The error message seems to indicate that I am still using a gateway somewhere though .... but the table name it's referring to is in the Azure SQL database so it's confusing.
Thanks in advance,
Sandy
Hi @sandy_ew
But I would recommend doing is going back to your power BI desktop and then changing the connection string to connect your azure sql database. We upload and see if that works.
