Please keep your eyes on the following feature requests and vote them.
Addition of multiple Excel file data sources by folder/wildcard
Add support to Power BI Gateway for mashups of On-Premises and SharePoint Online data sources.

C_Wilson When is the last time you updated the gateway? Also, this reads like you are not currently using the personal gateway. The Data Gateway (On Premises Data Gateway) does not support mixed mode datasets. (Online vs. On premises) -> Only the personal gateway does at this time.
Thanks Seth that was actually my problem don't know why it worked, but it did.
