Data Gateway Update questions

Hello,  I've been searching the forum and other various locations, any feedback appreciated.

I have a current data gateway it's out of support since it's maybe 3 years old and running on

Windows 2016.    It basically works but I've hit occasions where if I use dataflow it tells me

my gateway is unsupported.   I have a one-time case where it'd be useful to have dataflow..

In order to update the gateway it appears I'll need Windows Server 2019 64 or later...   In the

install requirements it says up to 2022 windows server.. but we also have Windows Server 2025.

I'm wondering:

* Should I just leave it as is.. .it's working fine although it's unsupported but at least we'll be caught up

* We currently have a single instance - no cluster but I created the performance reports and there

isn't a heavy load so there's no reason other than failover to create a cluster.

Upgrading I'm wondering if we'll run into other new issues - including the update/migrate - since we'll go to a new VM with Windows 2025

Just interested to know other peoples experiences with data gateway and if all is great now.. if it's

worth pulling the trigger on it?

get yourself a voodoo doll and start pricking it.

No Recovery Key = you need to start over completely.  No way around it.

Hello,  unfortunately the people before me were non-believers in documenting anything (at all)  ... so

I do not have the recovery key ---     which is wonderful -       I'm betting I have to delete or remove the

gateway .. .then create a new one --  which makes my work ten times harder.

Any words of advice?

Hi  @mprabucki,
Thanks for reaching out to the Microsoft fabric community forum.

Upgrading your on-premises data gateway is essential for maintaining security and compatibility with Microsoft services. Running an unsupported gateway on Windows Server 2016 poses security risks and is not recommended. Additionally, since you're already experiencing warnings with Dataflows, future updates could render them entirely incompatible with your current gateway. While Microsoft's official documentation lists Windows Server 2019–2022 as supported, there is a possibility that Windows Server 2025 could be included in the future. However, before committing to an upgrade, it is advisable to test in a non-production environment to ensure a smooth transition.

Thank you!  this is great.   Yes this helps in thinking through this.    Another post mentioned recovery keys.. my predecessors did not believe in helping future workers so nothing was documented or left for me.   Any words of advice or suggestions are welcome.

Set up a new VM with the latest-ish OS and latest gateway version.  When you install the gateway, choose "Take over", and kick the old gateway VM to the curb.

For this to work you need to have your Recovery Key.  You have the Recovery Key, right? Right?
