Daily Refresh Failures on PBI Dataflows - Transport-Level/Decryption Errors

Hi All,

 

We have been experiencing daily refresh failures on several of our dataflows in the PBI Service. The dataflows connect to a SQL Server database in Azure, but it is not the same dataflow that fails each day - it is usually 3 or 4 of a set of 5 or 6, but there does not seem to be a rhyme or reason to which succeed each day and which fail. The error is the following:

 

Microsoft SQL: A transport-level error has occurred when receiving results from the server. (provider: SSL Provider error: 0 - The specified data could not be decrypted.

 

This has only been an issue since mid-January, and everything worked fine before this. The dataflows use a gateway connection, the credentials are correct & the gateway is the up to date version. When we go to refresh them manually after the scheduled refresh failures, we usually have to hit 'refresh' multiple times as even the manual refresh will come back with this error. Any advice would be very helpful, thank you!

Since this issue started occurring in mid-January, there may have been a change in the network configuration or security policy that affected the SSL connection. Please check with your web team to see if any updates or changes have been made at that time.

Even if the gateway is up to date, it's worth looking at its configuration. Ensure that the gateway is configured correctly for the SQL Server database connection. This includes checking to see if there are any specific SSL settings or certificates that need to be updated or reconfigured. For more details about configuring gateways for SQL Server, see Use on-premises data gateways with SQL Server:

Be sure to check the SSL configuration on SQL Server. Ensure that the server is properly configured to support SSL connections and that the certificate is valid and has not expired. For more information about SQL Server and SSL, you may find the Enabling Encrypted Connections to the Database Engine documentation helpful:

If your dataflow is configured for incremental refresh, consider reviewing the settings. Sometimes, issues with the incremental refresh policy can lead to unexpected errors. For guidance on optimizing dataflow refreshes, including incremental refreshes, see Optimize dataflow refreshes:
