DM_GWPipeline_UnknownError for initial refresh while setting up incremental refresh

Hi,

I am encountering an questionable issue while setting up the incremental refresh.

My setup: connecting powerbi to Azure cosmosDB, total records is 1million rows, incremental refresh for 10 archieved year and 2 days of incremental refresh. The data connection is via a virtual gateway.

After publishing the model to powerbi service and refresh for the first time, this error is shown: {"error":{"code":"DM_GWPipeline_UnknownError","pbi.error":{"code":"DM_GWPipeline_UnknownError","parameters":{},"details":[]}}

The error is shown after 15-20 minutes of running.

One weird thing is that, out of 10 attempts, around 3-4 times are successful.

anyone knows how to fix this?

Thank you,

Hi @Anonymous

maybe this error coming due to capacity throttling at that time when it fails you can check below points

  • Optimize Cosmos DB queries and ensure partitioning is efficient to avoid long-running operations.
  • Reduce data load or adjust refresh policies to prevent timeout issues; ensure query folding is working.
  • Analyze Power BI and Cosmos DB logs for detailed error diagnostics to pinpoint the root cause.
