Creating datasets that can be extended

Hi All,

Apoligies if this is the wrong section but it seemed the closest. As an IT administrator I find myself in a situation where more and more users are requesting access to data from an in-house database. This database contains both sensitive and non-sensitive data so I cannot just grant everyone read access to it, additionally many tables have unfriendly names and relationships so for those that I can grant access to I still end up having to explain a lot of what they are looking at.

To solve this problem I am looking to create and publish some datasets that show only the tables and columns that the user actually needs to see. I will rename some columns to have friendlier names and pre-create a set of connections between common tables.

The dataset creation part works fine as expected however where I run into issues is when a user wants to build a report based on one of my pre-defined datasets. I want the user to still be able to use transform data to bring in data from other sources as required, I also want them to be able to add calculated columns and create/modify connections in the model. When using a published these options become unavaliable.

Is there a good way to achieve this?

@DorienM   - Dataflows will be one option. You can set up some master tables and commnly used tables with user friendly names etc.  One dataflow can have multiple tables.  Users can connect to a data flow and import a single or multipe tables, do trasnformations and cerate a model as they desire.

The other optin would be the newly introduced Datamart feature.
