Creating a Portfolio / Dev environment for an Individual
Hello All,
I have some experience with Power BI and would like to set up reports and dashboards to share with potential employers, and also to have an area to test Power BI features, different visualisations, security, datasets, etc.
I am prepared to pay for a Pro / Premium licence, and I want to be able to do this as an individual i.e. without a business / institution / organisation email account.
The Power BI service doesn't seem to like registering individuals outside business/organisations. Is there a way to achieve my aims as an individual?

You need a way to create a tenant (xxx.onmicrosoft.com).
Both 365-developer and azure-trial can give you such a tenant.

https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/dev-programAs soon you have the tenant, you can maintain it with portal.azure.com. Within the tenant there are:
- Licenses (like Office or Power BI)
- Subscriptions (Azure Services like SQL)
The Azure tenant itself doesn't cost anything. The Azure trial will give you a subscription to test SQL for example. When the trial is over you wouldn't use the Subscription anymore, but the azure tenant will still be there.
The m365 developer will give you a license that you can assign to your user.

it is no problem to create a one-person-organisation as a Microsoft tenant.
I suggest to create an Azure trial account. This will create a domain like "yourorgname.onmicrosoft.com". You will be the administrator and get an organizational account like "[email protected]".
Then you can buy a Pro or Premium license for "[email protected]".You can even connect your personal domain (if you have one) with the tenant.

Addition: for testing purposes, you can setup a Microsoft365 developer account for "[email protected]. It will give you an E5 plan including Power BI Pro. Of course not for productive use. And the Azure trial will give you trial possibilitiers for example for Azure SQL databases, good for Power BI learning...

I will take a look at your suggestion. But I'm not clear whether you are saying that you can set up a one-person-organisation without a Microsoft Azure trial. In which case won't the Azure trial expire - and if so, would I still be able to use the Power BI account?
