Create Groups in Azure AD and apply security to power bi dataset

Hello,

I am working on managing access for power bi datasets security. In order to implement RLS, first I want to create 2 groups in Azure AD and then add those groups inside power bi security RLS.

Could you please guide me or help with resources to create groups for members in azure and add those groups to power bi dataset security.

Hi Anotny,

To create groups in Azure AD and apply security to Power BI datasets, here are some of my completed steps that you can follow to create them.

First, please create groups in Azure AD

1. Go to the Azure portal(https://portal.azure.com) and sign in with an account that has the necessary permissions to create groups.
2. On the home page, choose left-hand side, select “Microsoft Entra ID” from the services list.

     3.In the Microsoft Entra ID pane, select “Groups”

     Click on “New group”

     4.Fill in group details:

• Group type: Select “Security”.
• Group name: Enter a name for your group.
• Group description: Provide a description (optional).
• Membership type: Choose either “Assigned” or “Dynamic User” depending on how you want to manage membership.

 

 

     5.Add members:

• Click on “No members selected” to add members to the group.
• Search for and select the users you want to add.
• Click “Select” then “Create”. 

   6.Repeat steps 3 to 5 for the second group. 

 

Adding Azure AD Groups to Power BI Dataset Security

1. Go to Power BI Service (https://app.powerbi.com) and sign in.
2. In the workspace where your dataset is located, click on ”Datasets”. 

     3. Find the dataset you want to apply RLS to and click on the “More options(...)” button.

Select “Security”.

4.Apply RLS to the groups:

• In the RLS pane, click on “Add”.
• Search for the Azure AD groups you created earlier.
• Select the group and assign the appropriate roles.
• Click “Save” to apply the changes.

 

By following these steps, you Can created two security groups in Azure AD and applied them to your Power BI dataset security for implementing Row-Level Security (RLS).
