Hi there,
I tried to build a report using semantic model from another report in a different workspace.
After I publish to the service, I ran into a question on setting up the connection.
Is it possible to set up using a gateway connection that connects this particular semantic model from the other workspace?
I know gateway is not required in this type of connection but I just want to explore the possibility here.
I've tried to set up the gateway connection but run into an error. It also only allows Windows type authentication which I believe this is the reason of the failure.
If we cannot set up gateway, how do we manage the access? For example, the new report will be accessed by group A, but group A doesn't have access to the source semantic model and we don't plan to add them to the workspace where the source semantic model lives. In this case, is it the only solution that to add group A to the source semantic model itself?
Looking for forward to hearing any suggestions.
thanks!
another follow up question, in your solution, you mentioned that we need to share the original report to Group A so that they can view the data on the newly created report. Is there a way to just grang them the access to the semantic model instead of sharing the actual report with group A?
Hi @dmkblesser ,
It's important to clarify that when connecting to a semantic model from another workspace, especially within the Power BI service, the use of a gateway is typically not required for cloud-based sources. Gateways are primarily used for on-premises data sources to securely transfer data between on-premises data sources and cloud services.
To manage access for users (Group A in your scenario) who do not have access to the source semantic model and are not part of the workspace where the semantic model resides, you have a couple of options:
Share the Report: You can share the report built on the semantic model with Group A. This does not require adding them to the workspace where the source semantic model is located. However, they need to have the necessary permissions to view the report.
Publish to Web (Consider Security): This option allows you to embed reports in public websites or blogs, making them accessible to anyone on the internet. This method should be used cautiously and is generally not recommended for sensitive data.

Hi Binbin, thanks for your prompt response. Like my original post, I understand that cloud connection typically doesn't require a gateway. However, if there is a need to use the gateway for company policy, is there a way we can set up gateway connection for the semantic model connection? thanks!
