Confusion over how to see useage on an App

I have published ny reporting into a Power BI App,

a little later I have done to the report in Serice and clicked ... to get to view Usage metrics report.

Its blank. But I have added viewers into the app to look at it.

Am I seeing usage for the report in the workspace AND the App. Or just the workspace. And If Im not seeing App usage. How do I see this?

Thanks

Hi @DebbieE ,

In Power BI Desktop, you can check app usage.

When you open a blank report, choose get data and Power BI semantic models. There you will find as many "Report Usage Metrics Models" as you have different apps. The location column indicates which app/workspace you are checking the usage for. As most of my users only have report access by using apps, I'm 100% sure these usage stats include app views.

I hope this helps to get you started!

Hi @DebbieE

When you view the usage metrics report from the Power BI Service for a report, you're primarily seeing the usage within the workspace where the report resides. This includes views and interactions by users who have direct access to the workspace. However, it's crucial to note that usage metrics reports don't show up in Recent, Workspaces, Favorites, or other content lists and can't be added to an app. This means that if you pin a tile from a usage metrics report to a dashboard, you can't add that dashboard to an app, as detailed in theMonitor usage metrics in workspaces (preview) - Power BI | Microsoft Learn

So How do I see my useage metrics for the App. Thats the question Im asking. Good to know that the one in the workspace only shows the workspace information though.

But the main question is. How do I see App usage?

I didnt know you could do this. Is there some documentation for this as I would like to know exactly how to get the data for the apps. I have just found the Semantic model. This is great

Hi @DebbieE

Unfortunately, Power BI does not provide a direct, built-in feature to view usage metrics specifically for Apps. The usage metrics feature is primarily focused on individual reports and dashboards within workspaces.

??? But this is where all the users view the reporting. Its the recommended way?  This is the very thing we want to track. Surely there has to be a way of doing this? Or else Microsoft are really missing the ball here?

Hi Debbie,

I might have read your issue incorrectly but the app is just a container for a collection of reports from the workspace so looking at the usage in the workspace gives you the breakdown of the usage of the reports through the app. What it won't be able to give you is who accessed the report via the app vs via a share directly off the report. If you're in that position, (and I sure hope you're not), then there's other more techy stuff that can be done assuming a person doesn't get the app and the same report through a share.

Thanks,

L
