Hi all,
I am a bit confused about the licenses needed to view PowerBI reports published in an app. I've read that people need a PowerBI Pro license to view published apps and I've read that a PowerBI Free license is enough. Which is it?
When I go to publish an App, it says the following:
"This app will be created in a Power BI Premium workspace. As long as the workspace remains a Premium workspace, anyone in your organization can be given access to it."
That means that people who have been given access to the app don't need a Pro license, right?
We give access to the app via adding them to an AD group and then giving that AD group access to the app. I've heard reports of people (who are added to the AD group in question) not having access to the app.
This really confuses me, because those people should have access according to the above.
Can someone reassure me that this is a correct way of working?

Hi @Anonymous , it depends on the type of Premium license you have and the type of workspace. If your organization has a Premium Capicity license and if the app is in a Premium workspace which is in the capacity, then Free licenses will be enough to access the app. In every other scenario, even if you have a Premium per User license associated to the workspace, all users accessing the report will need to have at least Pro license.
Hope this answer solves your problem!

Hi @Anonymous , yes you are correct, they will need a Pro licensing to access the app. Regarding your question at the end, unfortunately, even if your app is in a Premium workspace, users will still need a Pro license to access it. Only Premium Capacity workspaces will allow you to have Free users accessing reports, you can check the documentation on this here. So unfortunately, your users will need a Pro license nonetheless...
Hope this answer solves your problem!

Hi @goncalogeraldes, thanks so much for your quick response!
The workspace that I use to publish the app doesn't seem to be in a Premium capacity so that would mean that everyone who needs access to the app needs a Pro License, got it.
Why then does it say the following when I go to 'Update app' -> 'Permissions'?
It says the app will be created in a Premium workspace and (I assume) that people don't need a Pro license to access it. Are published apps created in a different workspace?
This is what confuses me.
Thanks again for your time,
Wouter Vork
