Complex visuals using Q&A or Copilot in Power BI Service

can it be possible to create complex visuals such as decomposition tree, Key influencers, Radar charts etc using Q&A or any other method may be using Copilot in Power BI Service?

  • Hi powerbiexpert22 ,

I tested this in Power BI Service with Copilot enabled.

When I asked “Show a decomposition tree of Total Profit by Region and Product Category,” Copilot analyzed the data and showed how it would split the results - first by Region, then by Product Category. The explanation appears in the Copilot pane, giving a preview of how the decomposition tree would look.

You can also refine the visual by asking something like “Add Year”, or switch to other advanced visuals such as Key Influencers, which Copilot can actually render on the report canvas.

Here are a few screenshots showing these examples:

This confirms that Copilot in Power BI Service can create and refine advanced visuals through natural language, even though some visuals (like the decomposition tree) are currently shown as analytical previews instead of full visuals.

    Thank you.

  • powerbiexpert22 Hi!

Yes, you can create complex visuals such as decomposition trees, key influencers, and radar charts in Power BI Service. While the Q&A visual allows users to ask natural language questions and receive visual answers, it doesn't support all complex visual types directly. However, you can leverage Copilot to enhance the Q&A experience and prepare your data for AI-driven insights.

Let me know if you need an help with some visuals.

    Hi powerbiexpert22 ,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Fabric Community.

Thank you BeaBF for the prompt response.

Copilot enhances Q&A by letting you create and refine visuals using natural language. For example, you can ask:

“Show me a decomposition tree of total profit by region and product category.”
Copilot will identify the right fields and generate that visual automatically. You can then refine it with prompts like “Add year” or “Highlight top region.” It can also create DAX measures when needed (e.g., year-over-year growth). In short, Copilot expands Q&A by building complex visuals, adding insights, and enabling conversational report building in Power BI Service.

      Hi v-venuppu ,

are you sure complex visuals like decomposition tree and other visuals such as key influences or radar chart can be created using Q&A in Copilot. as per my understanding Q&A is supported for basic charts like bar, line, treemap etc.

can you give screenshot or proof of same if possible in copilot?

  • Hi powerbiexpert22

Currently, in the Power BI Service, while Q&A and Copilot can help you generate visuals and insights using natural language queries, their ability to create complex or AI-driven visuals like Decomposition Tree, Key Influencers, or Radar Charts is still limited. Q&A mainly supports standard visuals—such as bar, line, pie, and column charts—and focuses on quickly answering data questions through common visual representations. Copilot in Power BI, although more advanced, works within similar constraints; it can suggest suitable visuals, generate DAX measures, summarize insights, and even build report pages, but it cannot yet create or configure advanced visuals like the Decomposition Tree or Key Influencers, which require manual setup and specific data modeling configurations. These visuals also depend on AI and statistical computations that must be explicitly defined in the report. For Radar Charts, since they are custom visuals from AppSource, they too must be manually inserted and configured. In short, while Q&A and Copilot can significantly accelerate report creation and analysis, creating or customizing advanced visuals still requires manual interaction within Power BI Desktop or the Service’s editing mode.
