Cleaning up legacy datasets, reports, dashboards

I find it very difficult to review the various datasets, reports and dashboards to determine which are  no longer being used or are broken.  One example is I will get an email saying a dataset refresh failed.  The link in the email takes me to the dataset, with no obvious help to determine which Workspace it is in, or a way to see if that dataset is feeding and reports, and if those reports are on any dashboards. The result is a lot of junk in a workspace, and no good way to filter out the good from the bad. 

What am I missing?

Nope, current power bi not contains any management tools to manage your personal contents.
Maybe you can consider to coding an application to use power bi REST api to control these contents or submit an idea for these requirement.
