Clarity on Pro licensing for publishing to the Power BI Service

Hello Fabric Community friends!

I read this article recently about Power Platform/Power Apps licensing being able to assign to groups
Power Platform admins can now assign licenses via Intelligent Recommendations – now in public previe... and I have been searching to see if this is currently possible or coming for Power BI.

Does anyone have any information or insight that Pro licenses could be assigned to Entra groups or mail-enabled security groups? Or is  Power BI Pro licensing (we are in Premium capacity) assigned to individual users still the only option for publishing rights?

Thank you
Jessie

Hey @JessieF ,

any user-based licensing like Free, Pro, or Premium Per User has to be assigned to a user; from my knowledge, this will not change.

You can automate this at least a little:

  • create a Power Shell script that assigns a Pro license to members of a group.
  • make the membership of the group a product that can be ordered from within your software catalog. Then run the script a couple of times

Hopefully, this helps and provides some ideas at the same time.

Regards,

Tom
