Cannot refresh data because of missing credentials and credentials settings are greyed out
Hello,
I am new to Power BI workspaces. I have a Power BI file that refreshes pretty normally on desktop but the workspace does not refresh due to this error:
Data source errorScheduled refresh is disabled because at least one data source is missing credentials. To start the refresh again, go to this dataset's settings page and enter credentials for all data sources. Then reactivate scheduled refresh.
I have two data sources, Google Sheets and ODBC. When I click on manage gateways and connections and I try to check their status, I get this:
Error code
DMTS_DatasourceHasNoCredentialError
Connection error
Connection has no credentials
Cluster URI
https://api.powerbi.com
I understand that gateways are only needed if we are using a csv file located in our computer, no? What do I need to do here exactly to be able to refresh the data on workspaces and on the app?
Thanks

Hi Anonymous ,
ODBC connections need a gateway, either in peronal mode or standard gateway mode. If you are Power BI tenant administrator in your organization I'd recomment to configure a standard gateway, otherwise you can use the personal gateway or contact the Power BI tenant administrator in your organization to set things up.
Be aware of the following to make it work:
- The ODBC driver and the gateway must be installed on the same computer.
- The ODBC driver must be able to connect to the data source. If the driver is installed on a different computer than the data source, then make sure:
- there is a working network connection between the computer with the ODBC driver and the computer with the data source and no firewall blocks relevant traffic (e.g. on port or executable level)
- both computers are up and running at the time when you attempt a manual or scheduled dataset refresh in Power BI service
- the data source (e.g. a data base server service) is running and accessible
- Once the gateway is set up, you still need to configure the dataset in the web-browser to:
- use this gateway for your ODBC data source
- provide credentials
You can download the gateway here: https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/gateway/
