Cannot overwrite an existing report

Hello, 

 

I have a published a report with the same name as an existing report in the same workspace but instead of overwriting the old report, a new report with the same name is actually saved in the same workspace

 

The old report is connected an outdated Power BI dataset. I could just delete the old report only if there are no dashboard tiles connected to it. Help please?

I had a similar issue to what you described in your original post.

 

My fix was to ensure both the old report and the old dataset had the same name as the pbix file I had made edits to.

 

Download the old report > make edits > publish with the same edited report with the same name as the old report + dataset name > Overite succeeded!

 

I also wanted to retain the old usage metrics which this override method allows for as well as keep the original link to the report I had shared with users.

I too have this problem of duplicate report after dataset change. I don't want to email users of my report with another link. It would be helpful if any one can confirm that - we can overwrite reports even after a dataset change. Then only we should raise a support ticket.

 

At the moment we don't know if this a bug or a expected behaviour / known limitation.

Remember to try exiting out of PBI desktop and restarting. Then try publishing again, this worked for me where it then successfully replaced the report I was trying to overwrite.

Hi @Anonymous ,

 

Please check the name of dataset and report in Service is the same as the PBIX file name in Desktop, there is no extra space in them. And then select the same App workspace or My Workspace which original dataset located to publish. 

 

Based on my test to publishing report to Power BI Service in the latest version 2.72.5556.801 of Power BI Desktop, it overwrite well. You may upgrade the Power BI Desktop.

You can try to download the existed report in Power BI Service, open this pbix file in Power BI Desktop again, see if it is replaced successfully.

Or you may delete the old report, and publish again.

Hello, The pbix has the exact filename as the other report, only the data source is different. I can't delete the old report as there are dashboards linked to it. If there's a way to remap the dashboards, I would have done that but recreating them is a very tedious part.
