Cannot get at my data using the Gateway

Hi,

I am evaluating the 60 day trial of Power BI when using with my on-premise SQL Server data.  I have successfully installed the Gateway and I can see the gateway in Power BI.  I was able to create a New Data Source using my on-premise SQL Server name and database name and other credentials and I get the green tick - connection successful.

However, When I go to GET DATA > Databases > Get > Analysis Services > Connect >

I get

"Support for Analysis Services Connector has ended, and databases connected using this method no longer appear in this list. Only databases connected using a data gateway appear. To upgrade, follow the steps here."

Servers -NO RESOURCES FOUND

I expected to see my data source listed here

Am I missing a step?

The Power BI was good to tell you what the next step was up until checking the user was added to the data source, then the steps (tips) ran out.!

Thanks. Tony

@tonywinters All you need to do is use the Power BI Desktop. This is a free download, and the application is really the backbone for creating robust Power BI reports. The Desktop will allow you to connect to your SQL instance, set it up using Direct Query or Import and allow you to build DAX measures and calculations on top of your dataset to enhance your reports.

Once you have your data / reports set up you only need to publish to the Service. Since you already set up your gateway, the dataset that you publish will automatically pick up the data source you have in the gateway and your reports will be able to be refreshed (if you imported) and will automatically refresh (if you used Direct Query)

TL;DR - install and use the Power BI Desktop to connect to your SQL Server.

Thanks @Seth_C_Bauer for the advice.  I did wonder that but saw somewhere in the PowerBI help/troubleshooting guide that indicated that I could avoid the desktop application.  I will try and give it a go and update the post shortly.  Thanks for the swift response. Tony

Hi @tonywinters,

Analysis Services Connector has stop support, you should install the gateway to host the datasource.

For detail information about data gateway, you can refer to below links:
