Cannot access external dataset via Gateway

Hi All!

I tried searching for this on the wider internet and came up dry, and the search here didn't yield much in the way of anything helpful.

For context, I am NOT the administrator of my companies PowerBI service or the Data Gateway that is being exposed to us. However, our admin doesn't know how to do this and has asked me to look into it.

IN DESKTOP, I am using the 'DirectQuery for PBI datasets and AS' Preview feature, with the 'Connect to external datasets shared with me' feature selected. When I do this, I can properly use (and add to) external datasets, which is a requirement for my upcoming work.

However, when I publish the resultant PBIX to PowerBI Service, I run into issues. When I open the report in Service, I get the following error: 'There is no gateway to access the data source jbht-e&t-contactcenter genesys access control . Verify the gateway connection configuration on the dataset settings page and make sure all required data sources are added to the selected data gateway.'

When I look under 'Settings' for the Data Set of the report I just published (the report that references the parent Data Set), it says:

To me, it seems that there should be a way to reference the dataset in the gateway config, but I don't know for sure. Can anyone tell me what I'm missing so I can let our gateway admin know?

Thank you!

Well, that may be what I needed. Like I said, I'm not the admin of that part, so I don't have full visibility into how it's configured.

I'm checking with my admin to see if that's set up. Will mark as Accepted or ask for details based on what he tells me.

      Thank you!

My admin has confirmed that this flag is set but I still see the error.

I understand that a gateway shouldn't be required but the report seems to think it has to be.

        Any other thoughts?
