Can I set-up a Gateway in Power BI Service when using Get Data in Power BI Report builder to connect
Can I set-up a Gateway in Power BI Service when using Get Data in Power BI Report builder to connect to Snowflake?
When using Data Sources->Get Data-> Snowflake in Power BI Report builder and putting the required details like URL, Warehouse and Role, I develop a report using this data source method. When publishing to PBI Service it's running directly without any need for a gateway but I want it to work via Gateway, is there any way to achieve this?
Hi AnupamaSemwal99,
If you want to connect to Snowflake through a gateway using Power BI Report Builder, you should switch from Get Data - Snowflake (native connector) to ODBC. The native connector always uses a cloud-to-cloud connection and does not go through the gateway, but ODBC connections can be routed via the On-Premises Data Gateway. To set this up, install the gateway and the Snowflake ODBC driver on the same server, then create an ODBC DSN using the settings you will use in Report Builder. In Power BI Service - Manage Gateways - Add Data Source, select ODBC as the type and enter the DSN name and authentication details matching the DSN on the gateway server. After adding the data source, publish your paginated report (RDL), and in the dataset/data source settings, you should see the ODBC gateway entry to map your report to the gateway connection.
It's important that the DSN name in the gateway matches the one used in Report Builder, or the mapping won’t show up. Also, ensure the credentials match what Snowflake requires. Once mapped, report refreshes and executions will go through the gateway instead of directly connecting cloud-to-cloud. This approach is recommended for enforcing gateway use with paginated reports and Snowflake.
Thank you.

Hi AnupamaSemwal99,
Why do you want to use a gateway for a cloud to cloud connection? This will just add overhead and probably cause some errors that are hard to troubleshoot.
If you must, the gateway needs to be installed on a server and configured by the Fabric Administrator before you can make the connection on it.

Hi tayloramy it's a client requirement, can you please let me know me the exact steps how it could be achieved, I'm fairly new with the Report Builder

It is possible to allow the gateway to process cloud data sources. But it is not necessary, and it is irreversible. Once you added a cloud data source to a gateways you will always need to use the gateway.
Ideally you would not need a gateway. There is one exception - if you made the mistake to merge an on-premise source with a cloud source in Power Query - that mandates the gateway for the cloud source. But again - that is a mistake that you shouldn't make (at least not twice).

Hi lbendlin I'm using just Snowflake cloud connection, can you suggest me how can I setup a gateqay for it

On your gateway check the second box.
Merge or append on-premises and cloud data sources - Power BI | Microsoft Learn
NOTE: I do not recommend you do that.

Hi AnupamaSemwal99,
The first step is to install a gateway and make a connection. See Install an on-premises data gateway | Microsoft Learn
Once the gateway is installed, you create the snowflake connection. See Add or remove a gateway data source - Power BI | Microsoft Learn
Then, you upload your existing report into Fabric. Once uploaded, you should be able to go to the settings of the semantic model (it is created when you upload the pbix file) and choose the gateway connection for the snowflake data source.
Here is an example:I can move this sharepoint from personal cloud connect to a gateway connection:
Again, I strongly advice against doing this, it will cause problems down the line.

Hi, I'm still struggling with setting up a gateway connection when using getdata in power bi report builder and using snowflake there which a cloud connection, i'm not getting any optiom to configure the gateway for the report it just shows me the report data without needing any gateway, can you please help this particular problem when using cloud to cloud connection which in my case is Snowflake

Hi AnupamaSemwal99,
The behavior you're seeing is expected because when you connect to Snowflake using Get Data in Power BI Report Builder, it's treated as a cloud-to-cloud connection. Cloud sources like this don't use or need an on-premises gateway. As a result, Power BI Service connects directly to Snowflake and doesn't provide an option to bind a gateway. Currently, there's no supported way to force a paginated report that only connects to Snowflake to use a gateway, even if you've added Snowflake as a data source in the gateway. The gateway is only used if there's at least one on-premises data source, or if you're combining cloud and on-prem data in the same dataset. Otherwise, cloud sources bypass the gateway. If your client needs Snowflake to go through a gateway, the only option is to put Snowflake behind a private network or tunnel so the gateway can access it. With Snowflake as a public cloud connection, the gateway can't be enforced, which is why you don't see the configuration option in your paginated report.
Thank you.

Hi, thanks for clarifying the same. Since this is not possible via GetData I'm trying to connect to Snowflake via ODBC now and I want to establish a gateway for the same. Can you please provide with the steps for the same?
