Can I overwrite a report measure from a published Semantic model

I published a semantic model in Power BI Service. I connected a report to this model, created some measures, and used them in my visuals. Now I have 500 users on the report, and I need to move these measures from the report into the semantic model. I cannot erase them from the report and publish them under the semantic model because this would break the personal bookmarks of all my users. How can I overwrite a report measure with a published Semantic model measure so that my user's personal bookmarks don't break?

Hi @ControlBIA,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Fabric Forum Community.

It is not possible to move report measures into the semantic model without breaking visuals and user bookmarks, because Power BI tracks measures by internal IDs, not by name. Replacing report measures with semantic model measures will cause bookmarks and visuals to break.

Hi @ControlBIA ,

I don't think that you can.   The bookmarks are going to be based on the fields in the report.  MAYBE, JUST MAYBE, if you move the measures to the semantic model IF you have the exact same name for the field and you put it in the same location in the visuals it will be considered by the system as "the same field".  You might want to test that with a little report first for yourself.  The problem will be if that if the field has an identifier in the system that is changed, then the field will be "gone" and a "new" one will be there.  My hope is you get around that with the naming and locatiion.

Please let us know if that works.

I tried, and it does not work, but thank you.

Hey @ControlBIA ,

Yeah, I was afraid of that....  then, I really don't think it will work because you are changing the background guid's for fields.  So, make a nice email to your user group and tell them that they did so good that you are making the report more efficient, BUT, that will probably mean new bookmarks....  🙂

or - keep the measures in the report(s).  What are you thinking to gain by "putting them into the semantic model" (via Tabular Editor I guess) ?

These measures can serve the wider organization. Not only my users.
