Best way to schedule refresh Power Bi connected using Mysql connector for AWS RDS

Hello,

In my company, I generate Power BI reports for various areas by connecting through the MySQL connector to some views I created using MySQL to connect to an AWS RDS.

The issue is that I am updating the dashboards using a gateway on my computer, and even though everything updates correctly, I have to keep my computer permanently on for this to work. What alternatives can I use to avoid having to always leave my computer on?

I'm connecting to the databases using the 'import' mode; would switching to 'DirectQuery' instead of 'import' be a solution? Could this cause the dashboards to start running very slowly? Currently, my Power BI Desktop file is 450 megabytes.

Thank you in advance!

Hi @Laocsulak ,

Do you have the option to spin up a VM and run the gateway on there? Both DirectQuery and Import mode need a gateway to connect to your MySQL DB on AWS.

I created the virtual machine with an EC2 instance of Windows and installed the gateway there and it's working perfectly. Thank you!

Thank you for the reply. So, is the best option to create a virtual machine on AWS? Should I create an EC2 instance for that? Or is there a better option without needing to do that?

Hi @Laocsulak ,

I have never done it myself, but the way you suggested, I would go for.

AWS seems to propose EC2 as well.
