Best set-up: dataflow, dataset and report
Dear all,
currently I am using a big dataset which includes all different data-sources I need. It was build with PBI Desktop and has all my measures and relationships. This dataset is connected to different other reports to visualize my data. All data-sources are comming from SharePoint, so I am able to perform a refresh in the service as well.
I now wanted to test the oppertunity of dataflows, so that I outsource everything which is possible into the cloud, but I am wondering what is the best set-up. Am I still right, that measures and relationships can be build only in Desktop?
This means, I will create different dataflows for each data-source, which is basically only the modelling. Should I connect all dataflows again to one big dataset, to manage measures and relationships centrally? I will have different reports for visualization but sometimes the same data-sources will be needed. If I connect the dataflow directly to my visual-reports, I also need to take care of the relationships and create measures, which will be redundent. Or do I miss any possibility in the PBI Service, to handle measures and relationships directly here?
Thanks a lot for your support.
Hi sc4ry
"Am I still right, that measures and relationships can be build only in Desktop?" Yes
"Should I connect all dataflows again to one big dataset, to manage measures and relationships centrally?" Yes, Once you set up your Dataflow(ETL from all sources) in the service, you will import it to your desktop to build your Model(Dataset) and then publish it.
"Or do I miss any possibility in the PBI Service, to handle measures and relationships directly here?" No, you can't add or manage measures nor relationships in the service. All done in the desktop.
Note: to refresh your report in the service you first need to refresh the Dataflow after that you can refresh the Dataset to see the visuals of the report being refreshsed.

Helper I
Dear aj1973 ,
thanks a lot, that helps already a lot. Meanwhile I created some dataflows (Calendar, some dimensions and one data table). When I now want to access these via Power BI Desktop, I am getting the following error:
DataflowsStorageAccountKeyRetrievalForbidden: DataflowsStorageAccountKeyRetrievalForbidden
Details:
Error=DataflowsStorageAccountKeyRetrievalForbiddenAzure connections (preview) is enabled. Is there anything else I can do as a Workspace Owner or do I need to get in touch with our IT as overall admin?
