Best Practices and Tools Regarding Capacity Management/Usage Management/Performance Management
Looking for additional perspective on best practices regarding all of the following topics relative to PowerBI Premium
- Capacity Management - Environment capacity and performance
- Usage Management - Usage of indivdual reports and dataset
- Performance Management - Performance of the resulting usage of indvidual reports, datasets and datamarts
- Error/Exception Mnagement - Alerting/Notifications/Reporting of Timeouts/Out of Memory/Scheduled Refresh Failures/etc
We have used the app from appsource Power BI Premium Capacity Utilization and Metrics to get at some capacity metrics. We have also modified some of the OOB usage metric reports to get at some usage metrics.
Overall, I couldn't be more disappointed with how poor of tools Microsoft has given us to manage a data platform using actual data. From being poor performing to lack of actual actionable insights and trends they are quite poor.
This has left us trying to find additional tools/addons that are going to help us cut through this noise. Looking for your perspectives and ideas to solve this and what has worked and hasn't for your organization.

When you think about capacity management you want to figure out what is really important for your capacity. That pretty much narrows it down to number of available renderers, available memory, and eviction count. Everything else is noise.
What you want to focus on is the "long running queries" portion. Create a "wall of shame" for developers who are hogging renderers, and work with them continuously to improve their queries and data models.
What's you stance on Gen2 and elastic capacity?
