Azure Costs Management PowerBI App Refresh fails

Periodically, possibly after an App Update, the Azure Cost Management PowerBI App fails to refresh data claiming the credentials are now invalid:- https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/cost-management-billing/costs/analyze-cost-data-azure-cost-management-power-bi-template-app

Processing error: The credentials provided for the AzureCostManagement source are invalid. (Source at Enrollment Number;########.)

Opening the underlying queries in PowerBI Desktop, suggests that 5/10 of the data sources can authenticate successfully and 5/10 cannot.

Working data sources are:- RI Usage Details, Usage Details, Usage Details Amortized, Balance Summary.

Data Sources not working are:- RI Charges, RI Recommendations (single scope), RI Recommendations (shared scope), RI Usage Summary.

All of these data sources use the same parameters and credentials to connect, so why do some fail?

Thanks,

Simon

    Hi, simon-mac

You should always ensure that basic requirements for refresh are met and verified. These basic requirements include:

    • Verify the gateway version is up to date
    • Verify the report has a gateway selected - if not, the datasource may have changed or might be missing

In your case, consider that the refresh has failed because the credentials have expired. Data refresh can also fail due to expired cached credentials. Clear your internet browser cache by going signing into Power BI and going to https://app.powerbi.com?alwaysPromptForContentProviderCreds=true. This forces an update of your credentials.

  • Thank you for your prompt response, I appreciate it. Unfortunately your suggestion has not worked for me.

Some other things I have tried several times are:-

    • Updating Azure Cost Management app
    • Deleting & re-installing Azure Cost Management app
    • Forcing user logout & logon in PowerBI.
    • Updating credentials stored in dataset settings.
    • Use different browsers (Edge, Firefox, Chrome, Safari).
    • Use different PC’s, MACOS Win10, Win2019.
    • Installing new vanilla installation of PowerBI Desktop using latest version.
    • Creating new report and adding Azure Cost Management data source
    • I have cleared both the PowerBI Credentials & data source caches.

When I open the underlying queries for the Azure Cost Management data source from the PowerBI desktop half of the queries/tables connect & retrieve data and the other half fail due to invalid credentials. All of the queries are part of the same dataset and share the same credentials entered when initially accessing the data source; for example “RI Usage details” retrieves data, but “RI Usage Summary” does not. 2 very similar tables, both of which store RI Usage data. But why does one work and the other not?

I have installed PowerBI desktop onto a laptop which has never had PowerBI installed before, so previously cached credentials should not be an issue of this machine?

I am not sure if there is anything more I can do on the front end to resolve this? The fact that some queries work and others do not might suggest a backend issue on the sources?

    Regards,

    Simon

Verify Billing Number, as this sometimes can change.
