Automatically provide user access to "Report A" based the access to "Report B"

Hi community,

I hope this email finds you well.

I'd like to ask about the possibility to automate the "Access Approval" to a Ppower bi "Report A", based in the access of that user to a "Report B". Here the details:

Scenario description:

  • "Report A" is published on "Worspace Z" (all tables in "import mode")
  • "Report B" is published on "Worspace XY" (some tables pulled via "import mode", and some tables pulled from "semantic model of Report A" (live connection - direct query, using build permisisons)
  • As you can imagine, when a user with acces to "Report B" wants to see the visuals built wtih tables from "Report A", he gets the error "fetching data for this visual" (because he doesn't have acces to Report A")
  • Once "Owner of Report B" contacts to "Owner of Report A" and provide the list of users that need access; the problem is solved.

Question:

  1. Do you know if exist a workaround to automate the access to "Report A", based on the users list of "Report B"?
    • (or a semiautomation process that you have implemented in the past)

I remain attentive to any comment,

Thanks,

In order for this to work, you'd have to put in some kind of automation for this process to work where you would have to specify the relationship between report A and report B. If you can put that relationship in place, you could then use the power BI rest APIs to see the access that a user has in report A and then grant that access file. The rest API to report B. You could use this doing something like power automaton. that would take a few steps to get it completed, but it could certainly be done.  Admin - Reports GetReportUsersAsAdmin - REST API (Power BI Power BI REST APIs) | Microsoft Learn
