Automatic refresh Power BI report from a local excel file

Hi everyone,

What can I do so that everytime I modify a local excel file, the Power BI report (on Power BI service) based on this file automatically updates ?

Thanks

Hi. The way to update onpremise data to Power Bi Service you need a Gateway that will help you move the data automatically with a schedule refresh. You can schedule the refresh up to 8 times a day in regular licences (free or pro) and up to 48 times in a premium licence.

You can follow this post to get started or microsoft doc

I hope that helps,

Yes I heard about that and I have now a gateway, but I don't know how to link them and how that's going to automatically update my Power BI reports

Thanks for your answer !

Please check again the link I have sent. I know it's in spanish but you can ask the browser to translate it. That link is showing what to do from the installation until you have everything set up with the schedule refresh. At the end of the post you should have your powerbi configured to refresh N times a day (with your machine turned on of course).

You can also check this video if you like videos more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vlv1tbuZNcM

Just to be clear. There is NO way to have the power bi updated each time you change something on the excel. The refreshes are scheduled at specific time of days. You can manually refresh, but that's up to you.

I hope that helps,

P/D If you are looking for refreshing the data without your machine on, you should consider onedrive or sharepoint.

Thanks, I read the article. There's just one problem : when I try to add a new data source, I can't select Excel, there's a huge list of propositions and I don't know which one to choose

Hi there! you can use the Data source type "File" for a local excel, csv, txt, etc. It will automatically identify the extension once loaded.

I hope you can finish the configuration 🙂
