Adding data gateways to a cluster, then removing the original gateway

  • Gateway 1 is on a local VM
  • Gateway 2 & 3 are on Azure VMs, and were installed as 'new' gateways, using the recovery key from Gateway 1, and added to Gateway 1's cluster

Can I simply disable Gateway 1, then remove it - and let Gateway 2 & 3 pick up everything.

Or, do I need to 'restore' Gateway 1 on one of the Azure VMs?

You cannot remove the anchor gateway before all other cluster members are removed.

Instead, choose one of Gateway 2 or 3, and rather than installing a new gateway, select  "take over an existing gateway". Kick out gateway 1 by taking over its role. After that you can decommission gateway 1 as it is no longer associated.

NOTE: Rather than putting gateways on Azure VMs you probably want to look into using VNet gateways.
