Add notification symbol on a dashboard tile

We have a dashboard made of tiles representing different sections of business. These tiles point to separate reports with a bunch of indicators pertaining to KPIs for specific locations of a building. The idea would be to be able to display a kind of notification system on the tile itself, indicating which locations have a KPI that crossed a given threshold or so. Perhaps four square boxes representing locations, superimposed to the tile: 1,2,3,4, and box 2 should display a notification (kind of little bell) or maybe change the color to amber or red if the KPIs in that location crosses a threshold. What I did is to use visuals to create something similar to notifications (for example pie charts taking a specific color based on the threshold), but the problem is that they can't be resized ad libitum, and in general the thing doesn't really work as a notification system.
