Accessing datasets via XMLA from web application
I'm trying to discover details about using XMLA to access Power BI datasets from a web application. The main question is whether it is possible to do this, what authentication method to use, and what type of PBIS license is needed.
What I'm observing so far is inconsistent:
- Documentation says XMLA requires Premium (though it seems embedded also works, including hourly embedded A1). It does says "XMLA read/write", but I don't find anything about XMLA read being different.
- DAX Studio can read data from a dataset on PBIS with Pro. However, I'm wondering if this is only possible because it is a client application and can authenticate that way.
- I haven't been able to connect to a dataset via SSMS because it says that a Premium instance is required.
Appreciate any help figuring this out without having to build POCs that might be dead-ends.

Treat the XMLA endpoint as a SSAS instance. Whatever client tools or APIs can talk to SSAS can also talk to a Power BI dataset, be it on the desktop (via localhost:port) or on the service (via the powerbi://api.powerbi.com/v1.0/myorg/{workspacename[id]} syntax. id is required when you have multiple workspaces in the tenant with the same ID. (Gee, Microsoft, what were you thinking!?)
This DOES require some sort of AD account. Not sure how your API handles that.
And you're right, for simple data retrieval the XMLA write part is not really important.
