2 P1 capacities approach for the extra workload

Hi,

I am managing a Power BI Premium capacity(P1) in our org & we need to scale. I have been suggested by some liasions/partners that if we take another P1 & then use "Change Size" option in admin portal we should be able to resize it to a P2 - I am not able to find any supporting documentaion about it - & in this forum as well most of the discussion seems to suggest the opposite. So, my query is - if I resize P1 with another P1 - does it change the Compute resources from 8 to 16(& all the other benefits of it), & most probably I believe it will be a no - can somebody suggest some MS doc on it? I went through the "Guy In a Cube" youtube video where he suggested this is a scale out approach & not scale up - & I kinda see a point to it as well.

    Hi Max_701 ,

     

    By adding another P1, you effectively double the number of v-cores available, which can help distribute the load more evenly across your capacities. You can assign different workspaces or workloads to different capacities, which can help manage performance and avoid overloading a single capacity. Having multiple capacities can provide a level of redundancy, ensuring that if one capacity is under heavy load, the other can handle additional tasks.

    However, it's important to note that this approach is more about managing and distributing workloads efficiently rather than increasing the raw compute power of a single capacity.

  • Was able to effectiviely create P2 by adding P1 load on existing P1 through the help MS representative. Hence, issue is resolved.

    According to me adding another P1 capacity and attempting to resize it does not aggregate compute resources to effectively create a P2 capacity. To leverage the enhanced resources and benefits of a higher SKU like P2, you must directly upgrade your existing Premium capacity through the Change Size option in the Admin Portal.

    For comprehensive guidance, always refer to the official Microsoft documentation and consider reaching out to Microsoft Support for complex scaling strategies.

      So, if that does not lead to a P2(which I believe makes sense) then what exactly does the resize do, in case of a P1+P1, is there any benefit to this approach?

      Resize a capacity is however my concern, that P1+P1 being resized into one capacity should not equal to P2, which is what I have read in the forums. I have not read anything of the opposite being true.
