I have set up a periodic update of a report.
Is it possible to check the progress of the update when it is running?
Is the progress displayed as a percentage?

No this is not possible. There are too many unknown factors involved to be able to reliably calculate a percentage including many factors outside of the control of Power BI like the network bandwidth and the load on the source system.
Yes, the schedule page should show whether the job is currently running or the status of the previous run if it's not currently running.
