Visual-level filters disappear after republishing from Power BI Desktop

In Power BI Desktop, I added a new section to my existing dashboard.
For this section, I copied visuals from a previous section, renamed them, changed the fields to new dataset fields, and applied new visual-level filters using the Filters pane.

Everything looks correct in Desktop, but after publishing the updated report to the Power BI Service, the new filters are missing.
If I publish the same report as a new one to a different workspace, the filters appear correctly.

Has anyone faced this issue before or know how to fix it without deleting and republishing the report?

Hi @Wickylive

  • Ensure the visual‑level filters are applied and saved in Power BI Desktop ➜ File → Save the PBIX before publishing.

  • In the Service, after publishing, go to the report → Edit mode to verify the filters appear in the Filters pane.

  • If you’re re‑publishing over an existing report, there may be caching or persistent filter settings:

    • In Desktop: File → Options and settings → Options → Current File → Report settings → enable “Don’t allow end user to save filters on this report” so the Desktop default filters are honoured.Microsoft Learn+2

    • Alternatively, Save As the report under a new name and publish as a new report to confirm the filters show. (Many users found this workaround helpful when the filters didn’t carry over on overwrite publish.) Microsoft Fabric Community+1

  • After publishing, instruct users to click “Reset to default” in the Service (top‑menu) so they aren’t still seeing older personalized filter states. Microsoft Learn+1

i hope this help you !!

Hi @Wickylive

Do you have any bookmarks set as the default bookmark? That will override any filters applied.

Hi @Nabha-Ahmed ,

Thank you for the detailed suggestions. I verified that the visual-level filters were saved properly in Power BI Desktop before publishing.

In this case, the main issue was related to bookmarks overriding filters when visuals were copied from existing sections. Recreating the visuals resolved the issue.

I appreciate you sharing the additional options like persistent filters and reset-to-default — very helpful for future scenarios.

Hi @Wickylive

Are you publishing to the report server, or are you using Fabric?

This is the forum for the report server.

If it's in the service, do you have any saved filters on the report? The service will save your session's filters and re-apply them. This has been the behaviour for years before Fabric existed. See this old blog post: https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/announcing-persistent-filters-in-the-service/

Another thought, are you using bookmarks at all? If you have a default bookmark set, that will also remove filters.

Thanks for the clarification. Yes, I’m publishing to the Power BI Service, not the Report Server.

I’m also using bookmarks for navigating between sections. For the new section I added recently, I copied visuals from an existing section, changed the fields, and applied new visual-level filters. Those filters worked fine in Desktop, but after publishing, they didn’t appear in the Service.

Now I tried creating new visuals from scratch instead of copying, applied the same filters, and republished — and the filters appear correctly in the Service.

Could this issue be related to using copied visuals with bookmarks? And is there any other solution for this besides recreating the visuals?

Hi @tayloramy ,

Thank you for the clarification. After further testing, I can confirm that the issue was caused by bookmarks overriding the visual-level filters, especially in the case where visuals were copied from existing sections.

Once I recreated the visuals and ensured the bookmark state was updated correctly, the filters started behaving as expected after republishing.

I’ve marked your reply as the solution since the bookmark behavior you mentioned was the key reason behind this issue. Thanks again for your helpful guidance.

Happy to help
