Hello
Following on from announcement that VNet Data Gateway for Fabric and Power BI is now in General Availability, would someone from Microsoft please clarify:
Our Power BI Service is in North Europe Region and our Azure (Entra) Tenant where our Azure SQL databases are located is in UK South Region.
I read that:
The VNet data gateway is physically in the same region as your Azure VNet.
Does this mean that because our Power BI Tenant is in a separate region we would not be able to use the VNet data gateway?
Many thanks
PS Just noticed this Post was wrongly created under Report Server Forum, should be under Power BI Service Forum, but unable to move it - unless a Community Forum Admin can? Thanks..

Hi @JaneLHunt ,
Thank you. The VNet Data Gateway acts as a secure bridge between local data sources, such as Azure SQL databases, and Power BI services.
While the VNet Data Gateway is primarily used to connect to local data sources, it can also facilitate the movement of data from Azure tenants (located in the southern region of the United Kingdom) to Power BI service tenants (located in the Nordic region, specifically Dublin).

Hello @Anonymous
Thank you for your reply. The link you posted refers to On Premise Data Gateway whereas I am specifically referring to VNet Data Gateway which has just been announced as in General Availability.

What is a virtual network (VNet) data gateway (Preview) | Microsoft Learn
The Power BI Tenants are NOT located in different regions - the Power BI Tenant is in one North Europe region and the Azure Tenant, where the Azure SQL Databases are located, is in UK South.
The VNet Data Gateway must be located in the Azure Tenant according to the documentation.
My question is, can we use the VNEt Data Gateway to move data from our Azure Tenant in UK South to our Power BI Service Tenant in North Europe (Dublin)?
Many thanks

Hi @JaneLHunt ,
Even though your Power BI tenants are located in different regions, you can still effectively use the VNet Data Gateway. You can configure it to connect to your Azure SQL database and ensure the secure transfer of data. Even though it is not in the same region, it can still provide you with the functionality you need.
The location of the gateway installation can have a significant impact on query performance. Try to ensure that the gateway, data source location, and Power BI tenant are as close to each other as possible to minimize network latency.
