Unable to run report from Report Builder without admin group membership on report server

We have a user who has content manager access to the folder with our shared data sources in our Power BI Report Server. This user can run reports using those data sources from the report server site itself. When the user tries to build a report from Report Builder, he can connect to the shared data source and even refresh the fields in his local dataset. But, when he tries to run the report in Report Builder, he gets an authentication error. The user has read permissions in the database used by the shared data source. It seems like there's some problem with Report Builder on his machine making use of the shared data source on the report server. If we add the user to the Admins group on the actual report server (in Computer Management), the problem goes away.

Why can the user not run a report from his machine that uses a shared data source without being in an admin group? Thank you in advance!

When the new report is published to the report server, is the user going into the manage reports section, data sources, and then explicitly selecting the shared data source to use? By default it will be blank I think, so the shared data source needs to be selected after the report is uploaded.

Thank you for your reply. The issue is happening when the user is running the report from Report Builder on his machine. The report behaves normally when run on the report server site itself.

        Hi dmarchant

Gotcha, that makes sense then. WHen running locally, it won't use the saved data source on the report server, so the user would need to enter credentials.
