Hi @V_Jith ,
Thanks for reaching out to the Microsoft fabric community forum.

Use an On-Premises Data Gateway :

Since Power BI Service cannot reach private Azure SQL MI directly, you must configure an On-premises Data Gateway:

  1. Install On-premises Data Gateway on a VM or machine inside the same VNet/subnet as your Managed Instance OR with VPN/ExpressRoute access to the VNet.
  2. Configure the gateway in Power BI Service.
  3. In Power BI Service:
    • Go to Manage Gateways.
    • Add a new data source with:
      Data Source Type: SQL Server
Server: FullyQualifieddomainName of your SQL MI (Private endpoint)
Authentication: SQL Authentication / Managed Identity / OAuth2, as configured.
    • Map the dataset to this gateway connection.

Hi @V_Jith ,

  • You must use an On-premises Data Gateway (standard mode) to bridge Power BI Service to Azure SQL Managed Instance.
  • Install On-premises Data Gateway on a VM that has network access to the Azure SQL MI.
  • In Power BI Service → Manage Gateways, add a SQL Server data source using the FQDN of the MI.

Ensure:

  • Gateway VM can access MI on port 1433.
  • Authentication uses SQL auth or OAuth2 with HTTPS.
  • NSG and firewall allow the traffic.

Thanks,
Bhavin
