Can anyone please help me out. Our site initally started with September 2021 version of powerbi desktop and report server. Our test and prod environments where we have the dashboards are the same. I havent had to work on them in a few years and I downloaded Janurary 2024 desktop and report server and it wont let me save the report to the old test or prod server because the versions are different.
Has anyone came across this? I started doing my work on current dashboards in the new test environment on updated 2024 code but our PROD is still on the old code version of Sept 2021.
I get this error when trying to save Jan 2024 version on the Sept 2021 version
Hi,aduguid ,thanks for your concern about this issue.
And I would like to share some additional solutions below.
The problem you are experiencing is caused by an incompatibility between Power BI Desktop(RS) and Report Server versions.
Version compatibility between Power BI Desktop and Power BI Report Server is based on the principle of forward compatibility.
You can use PBIX files created with older versions of Power BI Desktop to open and use them on newer versions of Power BI Report Server.
PBIX files created with newer versions of Power BI Desktop may not be able to be opened with older versions of Power BI Report Server.
(Many of the features updated in the new version are not supported in the old version or the structure has changed)
Microsoft encourages users to update versions of relevant software and server platforms every year or so.
Do you need to continue to use the old version of your previous report from 2021?
I have two suggestions.
1. If you need to continue to use the old version of the report file in 2021. Please keep the 2021 version of Report Server and Power BI Desktop(RS).
2. If you do want to implement the update, then please use the new version of the software, which results in too old version of the file can not be opened.
(Newer versions of pbix files may also not open in older versions of Report Server Web Portal).
Unfortunately, Microsoft only supports the current release, plus the two prior releases, and the download links for the prior releases are no longer valid. Therefore, you need to make sure that you still have the 2021 software download on your computer.

I understand your feelings. It is important to keep your software version up-to-date.
I hope my suggestions give you good ideas, if you have any more questions, please clarify in a follow-up reply.
