Scheduled Data Refresh failing in report server

Hi there,

We have published one report to power bi report server. When we refresh the report manaully, it is getting refreshed in a minute, whereas when we enable schedule refresh for the same report, it is failing consistently.

We are using October'17 version of Power BI Report server.

Data Source: SQL Server (Import)

When we check the power bi report server log file, below is the error:

Processing Data Model Refresh: SessionId: f7ffc0dc-5123-4f0b-a53d-7e004f763f2a, Status: Error Failed to refresh the model, Exception System.ArgumentException: An item with the same key has already been added"

Question: If there is issue with data model, it shouldn't get refreshed when we do it in Power BI Desktop. But i'm failed to understand why it behaving differently when the same working PBI has been enabled schedule refresh.

Appreciate your help

Hi @sgovindarajula,

Based on my test in the latest Power BI report server version 14.0.600.442, the schedule refresh can be completed successfully.

1. Which Power BI report server version did you run? Please update to the same version as ours.

2. Please download and install corresponding Power BI desktop optimized for report server version then open the report, republish to report server.

3. If above ways don't work, please share detail information with us. For example, do you specify any T-SQL query when getting data; do you do any Merge/Append Queries steps after importing data, etc.

Best Regards,

Hi @v-qiuyu-msft,

We are using the October 2017 Power BI Report Server version. The PBI refresh works manually where as in report server it is failing.

Below are the steps which we have done to overcome this issue:

  1. Getting rid of Merge/Append queries in Power BI and handling them in the SQL ( which is our data source)
  2. Getting rid of, Custom Column which we have created  in one of the data set

By doing the above 2 steps, we would able to fix the refresh issue in Report Server. In other terms, we have ensured to keep our data model simple without making any modifications in the Power BI ( Like Merge/Append)
