Power bi Desktop March 2018 / compatible with on prem server
Super UserIf you open your Report Server portal in a browser, in the top right hand corner should be a download arrow. The download option in that menu for Power BI Desktop should take you to the version of Power BI Desktop that matches the portal version.
thank you for your reply! the download option is taking me to this version "Microsoft Power BI Desktop (Optimized for Power BI Report Server - May 2019) " but when i try to upload a report to the server using this version i am getting an error message
"Can’t upload this report
We can't save this Power BI Desktop report because either it is newer version or has component parts that are not supported"

So whey you click on the question mark (?) in the top right corner of your report server portal what version does it report? Is it May 2019 or March 2018?

Is this a new report that you created in the version of Power BI Desktop that you just downloaded? Or did you create this report with a different version of PBI Desktop?

Is this a new report that you created in the version of Power BI Desktop that you just downloaded? Or did you create this report with a different version of PBI Desktop?
Yes a new report created with the version i just downloaded.

So since your Portal is March 2018 then I would expect an error if you try to upload a file created using the May 2019 Desktop.
I don't know why the download link is pointing to that. My only guess is that because the March 2018 version is out of support that Microsoft has recycled the download link (see https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/report-server/support-timeline)
The only other suggestion I can think of would be to look to upgrade to a supported version as soon as you can.
