Power BI Report server performance vs Power BI Premium service performance
Hi all,
We are interested in running the Power BI Premium service, however, we have no idea what resource to buy and we have no option to test a capacity and see how it runs.
So I was interested in testing performance by using Power BI Report server instead. Mimicking the performance of the Capacity in the cloud.
I was planning on mimicking the EM1 Premium resource with the following:
- A Virtual Machine configuration with 1 core and 2.5GB RAM
- A core installation of Windows server
- Installation of report server
Does anyone have any experience doing this?
Or does anyone have any experience with how performance with Report server compares with the dedicated capacity in the cloud?

As for capacity planning, here's some links which can help you:
https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/calculator/ (PBI Premium)
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/report-server/capacity-planning (PBI Report Server)
We are running PBI Report Server on a 4 core VM, with 16GB RAM (approx 80/20 split between PBI Reports and Paginated Reports). It happily supports our user base of 3-400, with concurrent report accesses of around 15-20.

This isn’t an ideal way to see how capacity will perform in Power BI Premium as the solutions are architected quite differently under the covers - it isn’t apples to apples.
